Two courthouses, one county
Chickasaw County is one of a small number of Mississippi counties divided into two judicial districts. The first judicial district is centered on Houston and the second on Okolona, and each district keeps its own courthouse and its own set of land records. Most county business can be handled at either location, though land records are filed in the district where the property sits.
Communities
Houston and Okolona are the county's two largest towns and its seats of government. The county also takes in the communities of Woodland, Van Vleet, Buena Vista, Egypt, New Houlka and the surrounding rural areas.
County government
Chickasaw County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, each elected from a single district. Alongside the Board, county voters elect the Sheriff, the Chancery Clerk, the Circuit Clerk, the Tax Assessor and Collector, the Coroner, and the Justice Court judges and constables.
Economy and land
The county's economy has long rested on agriculture, timber and manufacturing. Row crops, cattle and timberland cover much of the countryside, and furniture and light manufacturing plants in and around Houston and Okolona employ many county residents.
