Road Maintenance

County road crews maintain the roads, bridges and drainage structures that are on the county road system.

What the county maintains

  • Grading and graveling county-maintained dirt and gravel roads
  • Patching and resurfacing county paved roads
  • Bridges and culverts on the county road system
  • Ditches, drainage and right-of-way mowing
  • Road signs and street name signs on county roads
  • Storm debris removal on county roads

Roads the county does not maintain

State highways and their rights-of-way are maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Streets inside the city limits of Houston, Okolona and other municipalities are maintained by that city. Private drives and subdivision roads that were never accepted into the county road system remain the responsibility of the property owners.

Reporting a problem

Road work is organized by supervisor district, so the fastest way to get a pothole, washout, downed sign or drainage problem addressed is to contact the supervisor for your district. Please have the road name, the nearest address or intersection, and a short description of the problem ready.

Driveway culverts and road access

Installing a new driveway or culvert on a county road requires approval so that drainage is not blocked. Contact your district supervisor before any work begins in the county right-of-way.
