Car tags
Tag renewals are due in the month shown on your current decal. Bring your renewal notice, or your license plate number and proof of current liability insurance. If you have just moved to Mississippi or purchased a vehicle, bring the title or bill of sale and your proof of insurance.
Property taxes
Property tax bills are mailed in the fall and are due by February 1. Taxes not paid by that date begin to accrue interest, and property with unpaid taxes may be sold at the annual tax sale held in August.
Homestead exemption
Homestead exemption reduces the taxes owed on the home you occupy as your primary residence. Applications are accepted between January 1 and April 1 each year. You need to apply only once unless your name, marital status, deed or use of the property changes. Bring your recorded deed, your Mississippi car tag numbers, and the Social Security numbers for you and your spouse.
Appealing an assessment
If you believe your property has been assessed incorrectly, speak with the Assessor's office first — many questions are resolved by correcting a record. Formal objections are heard by the Board of Supervisors sitting as a Board of Equalization, usually in early August.
