Courts

Justice Court

Justice Court is the county's court of first instance for traffic offenses, misdemeanors and smaller civil disputes.

What Justice Court handles

  • Traffic citations issued by the Sheriff's Department and the Highway Patrol
  • Misdemeanor criminal charges
  • Civil claims up to $3,500
  • Landlord and tenant matters, including evictions
  • Bad check cases
  • Small estate and bond matters set by statute

Your court date

The date and time of your appearance are printed on your citation or summons. Arrive early and bring a photo ID. If you cannot appear on the scheduled date, contact the Justice Court clerk before that date — failing to appear can result in additional charges or a warrant.

Paying a fine

Fines can be paid at the Justice Court clerk's window at either courthouse. Call ahead to confirm your balance and which payment methods are accepted before you drive over.

Filing a civil claim

To file a small civil claim, bring the full name and street address of the person or business you are suing, along with any contracts, invoices or receipts that support the amount owed. The clerk will collect the filing fee and the cost of serving the defendant. Court staff can explain the process but cannot give legal advice.
